Over 13 million lbs. of diazinon
are applied annually. Use is on a variety of agricultural
crops and livestock (about 20% of usage), on turf and for
residential control of various insects indoors and
outdoors (about 80% of usage). For non-ag use, the
largest share is in homeowner outdoor insect control for
turf and gardens...

In the late 1940's chemical
agriculture was introduced on a wide scale and we were
led to believe that the use of chemicals would result in
better crops, increased yield and lower input costs. We
were also assured that the chemical fertilizers were
safe...

Oregon State University
researchers found some tadpoles and young frogs raised in
water with low levels of nitrates (typical of fertilizer
runoff) ate less, developed physical abnormalities,
suffered paralysis and eventually died.

If you live in the Midwest you may
be tossing back weed-killer with your drinking water.
According to a report, pesticides contaminate tap water
supplies in dozens of American cities during the growing
season, when levels frequently can exceed federal
standards.

Researchers at New York University
have found that insect-killing toxin from Bt corn is
released into soil from the roots. The scientists say
more research is needed to determine whether this exuded
toxin has a good, bad, or neutral effect on organisms in
soil.
