PLANT
NUTRIENT REQUIREMENTS
For sustained
growth plants require 16-17 elements generally referred to
as macro-nutrients and trace elements. Macro-nutrients
include, nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K),
calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S). Trace elements
include, iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu) and zinc
(Zn). For optimum plant growth, the soil must be capable of
storing these nutrients and transferring them to the root
surface for uptake by plants.
Simply put,
plants require more than copious amounts of NPK to sustain
growth and, considering the fact that most chemical
fertilizer is applied based on NPK values, it is fair to say
that sooner or later a deficiency of trace elements will
occur. It is also important to consider the fact that soils
are derived from weathered parent material and if the parent
material was low in a particular element then, so to is the
resulting soil.
CB-FVR
