CB-SFS SWINE FEED
SUPPLEMENT
Memo from
Lisa Ell
1. We have found that by using
CB-SFS, we do not have to de-worm or treat the hogs for
mange. It appears that CB-SFS is controlling internal
parasites. As a result the animals are healthier and less
stressed and we are getting a higher rate of growth.
2. We have conducted a five month
test in our weaner barn involving CB-SFS. We fed the
weaners CB-SFS at a rate of 1cc per day per animal in
drinking water. Early on in the tests we found that the
manure from the animals that were fed the supplement
emitted considerably less odor relative to the animals
that were not fed the supplement. Based on the results of
these tests, it is fair to say that CB-SFS improves feed
efficiency. As a result the manure contains less
undigested mater, which results in less decaying matter
and less odor. With the exception of the first few days,
we have not had to treat the barn for odor for the
duration of the tests.
3. Tests on the milking sows is
ongoing. Initially we were feeding CB-SFS at a rate of
1cc per sow per day. We then changed to a rate of 5cc per
sow fed once per week. This change in dosage has not
affected the milking pattern. The sows are milking well
and always have plenty of milk.
4. We recently discovered that the
back fat on the market hogs was relatively high and, as a
result, our indexing was decreasing. To remedy this, we
reduced the CB-SFS feed supplement dosage from 2cc per
day per animal to 0.5cc per day per animal. After having
made this change we noticed that the animals were
indexing higher. This might not have resulted from the
change in supplement dosage, it could have been due to
the genetic make up of the animal.
